Abstract: The article is devoted to the N.V. Gogol's note in the album of Dr. I.P. Postnikov, left at 20th of May (N.S.), 1844. Scant information about the owner of the album gave scientists a reason to doubt the fact that Gogol and Postnikov were acquainted, thus, to doubt the authenticity of that note. Besides the issue of attribution, the question of interpretation is also raised. It is not known what Gogol did on that day, thus the interpretation of that note causes difficulties. We have proposed a variant of interpretation. All available information about the owner of the album and also about his acquaintance with Gogol is analyzed and systemized. Based on the biographical information about the doctor Postnikov the arguments in favor of the authenticity of the note in the album are given. The interpretation of the note in the context of New Testament reminiscences is proposed that gives the right to suggest that in the album note Gogol returns to the question of the role of art as a service to God.
