Migranova I.K. - The Problem of Discovering Gender Differences in Ways of Perceiving Academic Texts pp. 1-12

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2017.2.22978

Abstract: The subject of this article is the analysis of experimental research aimed at discovering gender differences in ways of perceiving scientific (academic) texts. The author of the article analyzes particularities of the male and female authorship of scientific texts, describes differences in how verbal stereotypes are perceived and examines such terms as masculinity and femininity that are often associated with easy or difficult understanding of texts. In her research Migranova has raised a question about the extent of impact of gender expectations on how information is perceived in academic texts and the degree with which these expectations influence the process of understanding academic texts. The research is based on a number of research methods including 1) observation as the method of collecting initial empirical information and 2) questionnaire surveys. The novelty of the research is caused by the fact that the research opens up new prospects for researching the influence of gender on the perception of scientific texts and provides grounds for including a gender component into contemporary models of understanding written information. The results of the research prove that female and male writings have gender stereotypes of femininity and masculinity which allows to talk about so called gender-dialect as an actual social phenomenon.

Abstract: In modern humanities the range of issues, related to manifestations of intertextuality in texts of different language systems, their interpretation by the recipient, as well as the use of intertexts by authors of verbal and non-verbal texts, is still of great interest to researchers. Moreover, the intertext plays a significant role in modern text-creating. This makes important studying the structural characteristics of intertextual units with the aim of developing the technic of creation one’s own intertexts as well as translating intertexts of others. So, the object of the present research are the intertextual units in the postmodernist writings, the subject are their linguistic characteristics. As the material the author has chosen the fiction by Julio Cortázar, which is particularly reach in intertexts. In order to delineate the existing definitions of intertextuality according to the “broad” and “restricted” approaches and precise our own vision of this phenomenon the author applied the methods of the cognitive sciences and semiotics. The general linguistic methods, such as description and observation, have been used in the analysis of the structure of the chosen intertextual units. The scientific originality of the research consists in the description of the linguistic particularities of different types of quotes in Cortázar’s fiction. During the analysis, quotations based on literal reproduction of the original format of the intertextually borrowed saying and citations that change it have been defined. The author pays particular attention to the analysis of the attribution, considered the key structural component of an intertextual unit. The results of the research may form the basis of the further researches of the linguistics of intertext. It may also be of practical interest to the authors using intertextual units in their own texts, as well as to translators of Cortázar’s and other postmodernist writers’ fiction.

Sofronov, V. V. - An Offer of Pain. Semiotic and Phenomenological Aspects of the Analysis of Marcel Proust’s ‘In Search of Lost Time’ pp. 5-18
Abstract: Perhaps we need to admit that during the second half of the 20th century the greatest discovery in the complex of sciences evolving around such concepts as ‘text’, ‘language’, ‘human’, i.e. anthropology in a wide meaning of the word, was not the discovery or proof of the idea of duality, superficial dimension, dichotomy of semiotic systems (culture). In some way or another, the idea of duality both of the language (binary opposition) and the world in general have been quite constant throughout European history.

Ioakimidi G.A. - Show Business Discourse as a Specific Sphere of the English-Language Discursive Space

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2016.1.18257

Abstract: The subject of the research is the analysis of the main features of show business discourse as a specific sphere of the English-language discursive space. The object of the research is the discursive elements of contemporary English used in the sphere of show business. The author examines this sphere as having a special type of discourse with particular characteristics. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the definition of 'discourse' and its characteristics, i.e. systemically important features, in the sphere of show business. Show business discourse is viewed both as a cognitive communication process that directly relates to the creation of numerous verbal pieces in the sphere of show business and a certain combination of texts, both oral and written, created as a result of the aforesaid process and devoted to the events ongoing in the sphere of show business combined with intra-linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. Within the framework of the present research, the author has applied the integrated research method that combined discursive and contextual analysis methods as well as the method of continuous sampling of discursive elements. The author concludes that it is appropriate to talk about show business discourse as a specific sphere of the English-language discursive space. The discourse of this kind has all th systemically important elements, in particular, it implies participants, goals, strategies and communication techniques, chronotope, communication topics, basic values, kinds and genres of discourse, precedent texts, discursive formulas and finally functions to be fulfilled as part of the discursive process.

Romanova E., Gubina N. - Reception of the novel “What is to be Done?” by N. G. Chernyshevsky: “new people” in the Soviet dramaturgy of the 1920s – 1930s pp. 28-41

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2021.2.33266

Abstract: The goal of this research is to reveal the peculiarities of reception of the novel “What is to be Done?” by N. G. Chernyshevsky in the Soviet dramaturgy of the 1920s – 1930s. These texts fully reflect the concept of state order, the pursuance of “socialist realist” normatization, and thus, most vividly demonstrate the specificity of functionality of the fundamental mythological concepts in semantic field of the Soviet literature. Particular attention is given to the plays by V. N. Bill-Belocerkovskij and A. Glebov. The article also employs the works of A. Neverov, V. Vishnevsky, A. Afinogenov, who largely determined the dramaturgical image of their time. The work is conducted within the framework of the mythopoetic approach, using structural-semiotic and intertextual methods. The relevance is substantiated by the need for a more comprehensive examination of the literary discourse of the 1920s – 1930s. The scientific novelty consists in attraction of an array of little studied texts of the “official” Soviet dramaturgy for identification of the cultural and literary sources of the image of “new people”, which determined the functionality of this mythologem in the literary discourse of the 1920s – 1930s. The conducted research demonstrated that in the period of post-revolutionary culture, the novel “What is to be Done?” by N. G. Chernyshevsky acquires the status of a sacred text, becomes the focus of intertextual overlap of dramaturgical texts, as well as one of the foundations for the formation of the Communist myth of the “new people” common to literature of that time. The works of the official Soviet playwrights are characterized by the declaration of continuity with regards to the novel, which in their works is demonstrated on the level of plot, themes, ideas, particular images, and separated details.

Belozerova E.Y. - Inventing Anna: phraseology in the headlines of the English-language press pp. 32-39

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2022.6.38204

Abstract: The article examines a number of modern phraseological units (phraseological units, derivatives of phraseological units and author's formations) on the example of the headlines of the English-language press. All the presented empirical material is analyzed according to the context of the publications, as well as the time frame (January 2022 – May 2022). The relevance of the research is due to the emergence of secondary nominative means of modern English as a communicative necessity. The object of research in the article is phraseological units of the language used in the headings of articles devoted to the study of the phenomenon by Anna Sorokin. The subject of the study is the communicative and pragmatic functions of phraseological units in the media used to describe and characterize the main character and her act. The purpose of the work is to study and analyze the received phraseological units for the possible identification of a new phraseological unit describing the distinctive features of both Anna Sorokin and her history. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the quality of the material (modern English-language press), as well as attempts to establish a phraseological unit directly pointing to Anna Sorokin and her fraudulent actions. The main method of research is an inductive approach to the analysis of empirical material, in which conclusions are based on the study of specific phraseological units. To identify derivational transformations in the structural and semantic organization of phraseological units, the work uses structural and semantic analysis. The result of the analysis reveals the constant use of one proper name and two author formations, which can later be attributed to the phraseological fund of the English language. This research contributes to the development of principles and approaches to the study of phraseology of the English language, its enrichment, as well as the understanding of phraseology in a broad way.

Razduyev A.V. - Lexical Co-occurrence of Terminological Elements "Nanosize(d)" / "Nanoscale(d)" in the Modern Russian Language pp. 57-66

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2017.4.24388

Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of peculiarities of the lexical co-occurrence of classifying terminological elements "nanosize(d)" / "nanoscale(d)" in the modern Russian language. The author of the article considers the functioning of these terminological elements – synonymic adjectives in the Russian-language scientific-technical texts, points out different categories of notions of the corresponding terminological units. Multicomponent nanotechnology terminological units of the total amount of 230 lexical units with the obligatory components-classifying terminological elements in question and chosen by the method of continuous selection from nanotechnology scientific articles, books, Internet sites have served as the material of the research. The methods of the research include the above-mentioned method of continuous selection of terms, methods of discursive, contextual, distributive and content-analysis, method of reconstruction of terminological derivation models, methods of component, etymological and definitional analysis, which allow to study the co-occurrence of terminological units in the text and discourse. The author comes to the conclusion that the terminological elements “nanosize(d)” and “nanoscale(d)” under study are characterized by quite wide co-occurrence. The cases have been revealed when the same main terminological element is used with both classifying terminological elements “nanosize(d)” and “nanoscale(d)” and each one separately. It has been determined that the terminological element "nanosize(d)" is 1,3 times more frequently used than the terminological element "nanosñale(d)" due to its more universal character. The prevailing categories of notions of multicomponent terminological units include nanotechnology processes, nanotechnology mechanisms, nanotechnology substances, nanotechnology ideal phenomena.

Popov, E. A. - Language Norm and Alogism pp. 59-65
Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of possible examples of language anomalies in a text that is a natural consequence of disturbed logic of reasoning i.e. the consequence of a logical error. This raises a traditional linguistic issue bout the difference between language and cogitation, however, the author of this particular article stresses out the observance of a particular linguistic rule while alohism is the disobedience of logical rules and laws. Different examples allow to demonstrate how ignoring of logical patters can create linguistic errors and break the language norms.

Zenkevich I.V. - Promotion of the Russian Language in the USA after the Perestroika: Achievements and Challenges pp. 61-68

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2018.2.25692

Abstract: The object of the research is the role of the Russian language in the USA during the period since late 1980s till 2000s. The subject of the research is the means of promotion of the Russian language as an academic discipline in American schools and universities. The author of the article analyzes the processes in the American society of those times in terms of their influence on the status of the Russian language in the American system of education. Zenkevich also studies the relation between political events and popularity of the Russian language in the USA as well as historical reasons of the Russian language being an unpopular academic discipline that have been overcome neither during the Perestroika, nor after it. In his research Zenkevich uses empirical research methods, in particular, accumulation and selection of particular factors, comparison and estimation of the relationship between them. The author comes to the conslusion that despite the popularity of Russia and Slavic languages during the Perestroika, the Russian language did not take an important place among other foreign languages taught in the USA. Describing the reasons for such unpopularity of the Russian language, the author offers certain measures that may be undertaken to promote the Russian language as a foreign language in the American system of education.

Pishcherskaia E.N. - Verbal Means of Implementing Communication Strategies in English-Language Outdoor Advertising pp. 73-83

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2023.4.40117

EDN: UOLHEG

Abstract: The analysis of advertising texts is an interdisciplinary problem studied at the junction of various fields of knowledge, the pragmalinguistic analysis of advertising, among other things, is based on its understanding in psychology, philosophy, marketing, etc. The object of research is the texts of English–language outdoor advertising. The subject of the study is the strategic features of outdoor advertising texts, the main verbal means of expressing communicative attitudes in them. The author examines in detail the main characteristics of the outdoor advertising text, which is creolized in its structure, that is, such a text where verbal and nonverbal components create a single semantic whole and contribute to achieving the goals of advertising impact. The main theories of creation and realization of the influencing potential of advertising texts are considered. The main conclusion of the study is the conditionality of the choice of linguistic and non-verbal means of communication in the advertising discourse, depending on the communicative attitudes, both explicit and hidden. The author's contribution is a description of the classification of general and particular communicative strategies and tactics of the outdoor advertising text, among which strategies of a cooperative and non-cooperative nature are highlighted. The description of strategies is carried out through the analysis of the main linguistic means of creating an influencing effect in an advertising appeal. The novelty and relevance of the study is due to the inclusion of non-verbal components in the semantic fabric of the text, and, consequently, the need to apply new approaches to the analysis of such texts.

Leushkin R.V. - The Problem of Intra-Text Communication Links and Forms of Their Artistic Realization in the Novel by V.O. Pelevin "t". Narration in the Mode of Transgression pp. 204-215

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2019.1.24130

Abstract: The purpose of the research is to study the basic properties of communication systems inside the text (in-text) in the work of a Russian writer Victor Pelevin based on the analysis of his novel "t". In his research Leushkin analyzed communication forms and ways in Pelevin's novel "t" as well as highlighted semantic constructions that determine the specifics of the internal communication system in the novel. On the basis of these structures, the attitude of communicative instances, the in-text system of communicative relations, its specific features and main characteristics, ways of its artistic realization, are analyzed. The research is at the junction of the theory of literature and social philosophy. This study combines narrative, poststructuralist methodology and the theory of social communication. The novelty of the research is caused by the allocation of semantic constructions as a condition for determining the interference of the in-text system of communicative connections of the novel by Victor Pelevin. It is asserted that the narration of the novel by Victor Pelevin "t" is carried out in the mode of transgression. The following types of narrative are distinguished in the text. The key feature of the structures of the communicative connections of the novel "t" is its alignment through a game with the objectification of semantic constructs and the implementation of a narrative transgression in it.

Faritov V.T. - The Philosophy ofTime and Eternal Return in the Lyrics of Afanasy Fet

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2015.3.16812

Abstract: In this paper Faritov investigates the specificity of the poetic interpretation of the philosophical problem of time. The main material of the research is the poem "Shaggy pine branches ragged from the storm ...". The author also discusses the poetic texts by Fyodor Tyutchev, Alexander Pushkin, Valery Bryusov and Johann Goethe. In order to analyze their poetry, the author also touches upon conceptual developments of such philosophers as Shopenhauer, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Jaspers and Deleuze. In his research Farotiv has used the methodological provisions of the motivic analysis (offered by Boris Gasparov) and the principles of analysis of the poetic language introduced by Tynianov. The novelty of the research is caused by the fact that the author studies the idea of eternal return that was first offered by Nietzsche and later explicated in Russian poetry. The researcher has defined the two opposite modes of time and analyzed their representations in poetic texts. The author also emphasizes that a poetic text has many semantic dimensions and therefore analysis of poetic texts cannot be limited to certain rules.

Gorbunova N.N. - To the issue of a transdisciplinary character of some terminological systems

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2015.4.17089

Abstract: The article is devoted to the issue of a transdisciplinary character of some terminological systems drawing on the example of the sphere of management. In the framework of one field of knowledge a terminological unit has a standard set of constitutive features, such as monosemanticity, systemacy, etc. Due to the fact that nowadays some terminological systems go beyond a certain field of knowledge, some lexical corpora acquire the features of over-disciplinary terminological systems, that is their lexical units are used in several special spheres. The article attempts to give a complex cognitive-philosophical foundation of the above-mentioned process. A complex method of research is applied in the work, that comprises the contextual type of analysis, method of continuous selection of terminological units, as well as general scientific methods: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction. The first part of the article considers the theoretical-philosophical foundation of the transdisciplinary character of terminological systems. The second part of the article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of transdisciplinarity as an essential characteristic feature of some terminological systems in the light of cognitive terminology study drawing on the example management terminological system. The author comes to the conclusion that irrespective of a distribution of the term and its context the constitutive features of a terminological unit remain immutable. In turn the transdisciplinary character of terminological units is possible due to a complex mutual multidirectional extrapolation of terminological units from one field to another without a shift of the corresponding cognitive structures and, as a result, the changes of the semantic content of this lexical unit. A further study of the phenomenon of transdisciplinarity drawing on the material of different terminological systems is of special scientific interest and seems very perspective.

Zavarzina S.A. - The Role of the Associative Mechanism of Inference in Constructing the Semantic Coherence of the Text

DOI:
10.7256/2454-0749.2016.4.21006

Abstract: This article deals with the study of the associative mechanism of inference and its role in the restoration of the text integrity. Inference shows the dependence of textual content on the background knowledge of the reader and contributes to the integration of linguistic as well as extralinguistic knowledge in the semantic structure of the text. The reason for this is that inference reveals the conceptually significant elements in the propositional structure of the text and, by means of associative connections, opens access to the cognitive structures which components are relevant to the text. The fact that inference relies on associative connections between semantic elements within conceptual systems allows the reader to reconstruct missing conceptual features in the semantic gap of the text space. Inference brings the associative mechanism to a minimum as it activates the meanings that correspond to the local context. These theses are proved by the results of the conceptual-semantic analysis of the story “Genesis and Catastrophe” by Roald Dahl with the use of the software TROPES V84 which enabled to identify and structure the relevant semantic units in the text. The main conclusion of the research is that inference is the mechanism that is based on associative connections in the semantic space of linguistic units and serves to find a relevant uncontroversial context while association is a free message for inference taking into accuont semantic connections.
