Abstract: Based on the analysis of existing migration situation in the Russian Federation and functional migration legislation the authors view the questions of economic, social and cultural adaptation of foreign citizens and persons without citizenship in the receiving society; the authors define the term ‘adaptation’ and describe the basic features of adaptation; they also suggest their own ways to improve the mechanism of adaptation of migrants in the Russian society
