Zhigaltsova T. - Charting of emotions of the senior population of a small rural locality in the Euro-Arctic Zone of Russia pp. 28-42

DOI:
10.25136/1339-3057.2020.3.33698

Abstract:   Recent urban studies give particular attention to the concept of place attachment. A modern settlement, first and foremost, represents a space that is emotionally comfortable for the local residents. The goal of this research consists in the analysis of emotional attachment and/or rejection to specific places in a small rural locality of Komsomolsky of Velsky District of the Arkhangelsk Region, situated in the Euro-Arctic Zone of Russia, and formed in the middle of the XX century as a place deprived of a long and rich history and traditions. The research results are based on the survey conducted among 40 residents of the locality aged 50 years and older. It demonstrated that the residents experienced various emotions of joy, interest, comfort, sorrow, pride, anxiety, shame, and disgust towards public places in the locality. At the same time, a single place (for example, a hospital, an abandoned school, gym, etc.) may incorporate both positive and negative emotions. The detected emotions were placed on a physical map and revealed the diversity of emotional perceptions of residents, with concentration of emotions in the center and suburbs of the locality. The interactive map is presented on the Internet resource http://emogeography.com/emotional-maps.html. The map exceeded the geographical boundaries of the locality and included several kilometers of the neighboring area. The research has vast implications for the improvement of emotional well-being of the residents of small rural settlements. Some recommendations on the reconstruction of center of the locality and engagement of population into social and cultural events are given.

DOI:
10.25136/2409-8744.2018.4.27006

Abstract: The subject of this research is the historical settlement of Vorzagory located in Onega District of Archangelsk Oblast. It has multiple cultic monuments of regional significanc: Vvedenskaya Winter church, NIkolskaya Summer church, bell tower, Church of Sts. Zosima and Savvatiy. The object of this research is the review of the structure of spatial organization of the settlement as a reflection of world perception of the dwellers of White Sea coast. In May of 2018, within the framework of the project “Wooden Temple in the Context of Studying the Russian Traditional Culture: Syncretism of the Material and Religious (based on the materials of the Russian North and Arctic)” was performed the expedition “Historical Settlement of Vorzogory (“Pogost with villages”)”. This settlement territorially simultaneously refers to the typical rural settlements in the Russian North and Artic territory of Onezhskoye Pomorye. The scientific novelty lies in coverage of the previously unpublished archival and field materials. The result of research lies in determination of the structural content of spatial organization of the village of Vorzagory, where the “pogost” is used as a town-forming dominant. The acquired data and analyzed materials can be applied in scientific, educational and museum activities.

Zhigaltsova T. - Sacrificial heterotopias of a provincial town pp. 73-80

DOI:
10.7256/2310-8673.2016.4.21603

Abstract: Within the framework of emotional geography, this article reveals and examines the “unfavorable places” among the children of provincial town, as well as determines the types of “unfavorable places” – “open” and “closed”. The concept of “heterotopia” along with its classification introduced into the scientific discourse in 1966 by the French philosopher Michel Foucault is in the center of this work. The author introduced the notion of “sacrificial heterotopia” – a place ignored by the community, and thus, sacrificed by it for the sake of social tranquility and sense of rootedness in urban space. The data for this article is acquired through anonymous questionnaire that includes the drawings of the children (11-12 y.o.) of Velsk of Arkhangelsk Oblast. The author draws a conclusion on publicity of the “unfavorable places”, emotional segregation in the provincial town, and defined negative meaning of the neglected buildings in children’s emotional space. Out of the entire range of “unfavorable places”, the author highlights the universal heterotopias of the closed type: school, hospital, cemetery, the drawings of which are characterized by the presence of multiple repeating elements – window openings, school desks, tomb stone, and others.
